What factors make a domain registrar increase the renewal price?

I registered a new domain name five years ago for a bit over $10 per year.

Now, when I go to renew it, it wants to charge me over $70 per year.

How can they do that?

Could somebody let me know a solution for this? I think it is bit ridiculous.

Thanks.

@VeryUnhappyUser

Usually that is because you got a multi-year discount - GoDaddy has improved the UI to make it easier to see the initial discount vs the renewal price.

Re: What factors make a domain registrar increase the renewal price?

Hi @VeryUnhappyUser,

Welcome to the Community!

The factors that increase the price of a domain are varied - as with all costs over 5 years. The Registry for the domain controls most pricing requirements for domains. You may also wish to review your domain before checking out to see if you have any enhancements added from your registration 5 years ago (privacy, business registration, protected registration, etc.).

Registry increases, improved domain management, account security, and the enhanced performance of our infrastructure dictate the first recent increase (early 2019) in several years to GoDaddy domain prices. You can read more about the importance of this increase here.

Sorry I didn't make myself clear. I renew my domain every year, not 5 years at a time.

It has been around $14 per year for the past five year and it jumped to $79 this year. Nothing got changed as far as I know.

Hi @VeryUnhappyUser,

That sounds very unusual. Unless there were major Registry changes, GoDaddy's prices usually "inch up", not jump up. Can you share the domain name for review?
