GoDaddy Help

Get an SSL certificate

An SSL certificate encrypts traffic coming from or going to visitors through your website, like email addresses or credit card information. Encrypted traffic can't be seen by anyone besides you and the customer who sent it. When your site has an SSL certificate, cybercriminals won't be able to steal your customers' personal information, and visitors to your site can feel safer knowing their information is protected.

When your site is protected by an SSL certificate, in a web browser you should see a padlock before your URL showing that your site is secure. You should also see https in the browser address.

What happens if I don't have an SSL certificate?

If you don't have an SSL certificate, browsers will display a warning that your site cannot be trusted - and that can stop people from visiting your site. Laws that protect personal information require SSL encryption, as do most ecommerce payment companies.

How do I get an SSL certificate?

GoDaddy offers a couple of options for purchasing an SSL certificate:

  • For WordPress and other content management systems:
  • GoDaddy Virtual Private Servers and GoDaddy Web Hosting (Economy plan) come with a one-year integrated SSL. We'll install and manage the SSL certificate for you for that first year. After that period, you need to purchase an SSL separately and install it yourself.
Note: You do not need to purchase a separate SSL certificate for Websites + Marketing, Managed Hosting for WordPress, or Web Hosting (all plans except Economy). These products include an integrated SSL certificate that we install and manage for you, and this certificate is good for the life of your hosting plan.
